What this tool does

It takes every recurring charge you list, no matter how it is billed, and works out what you really pay each month and each year. Subscriptions hide because the cycles never line up: a tenner a month here, a yearly renewal there, one sneaky charge every four weeks. Add them all, tag each one, and the tool normalises the lot into one honest total. Flag the ones you want gone to see what cancelling would save over a year, and jot how often you use each so the cost per use makes the dead weight obvious.

How the maths works

Each subscription is converted to a yearly figure by how often it is charged: weekly counts 52 times a year, every four weeks counts 13 (not 12, which is exactly why a four-weekly charge quietly costs more than a monthly one), monthly 12, quarterly 4, twice-yearly 2, and yearly once. The monthly figure is that yearly total divided by twelve, so every subscription is compared on the same footing. Cost per use is simply the monthly cost divided by how many times a month you use it, so a pricey app you open twice a month stands out. Every figure is your own: your prices, your cycles, your usage, your cancel decisions. Everything stays in euros; the tool does not convert currencies. When to use it
